Marzano Academies – Competency Based Education
Robert J. Marzano, PhD, is the founder of Marzano Academies in Centennial, Colorado. He is personally committed to the successful development of each Marzano Academy campus. He constantly enhances the Academies’ model and oversees the rollout of all school-partnerships. He also personally communicates with the leadership and staff of each partnership school.
During his 50 years in the field of education, Dr. Marzano has worked with educators as a speaker and trainer and has authored more than 50 books and 300 articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. His books include The New Art and Science of Teaching, Leaders of Learning, Making Classroom Assessments Reliable and Valid, The Classroom Strategies Series, Managing the Inner World of Teaching, Handbook for High Reliability Schools, Handbook for Personalized Competency-Based Education, and The Highly Engaged Classroom. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are known internationally and are widely practiced by both teachers and administrators.
Dr. Marzano received a bachelor’s degree from Iona College in New York, a master’s degree from Seattle University, and a doctorate from the University of Washington.
Paul currently oversees the operations of the organization which includes the financial management of school-partnerships with existing and proposed schools. Paul has twenty-eight years of experience within education as a teacher, school administrator, education management executive and independent consultant. Paul has worked nationally, with traditional education systems and private education companies to create schools from the “ground-up”, guiding organizations from ideas to implementation. Paul assisted with the creation of Marzano Academies and has worked to expand the organization since 2015. Paul received his education degrees from Arizona State University.
Carmen is the administrative management and finance director for Marzano Academies and coordinates the delivery of education support materials between Marzano Academies team members and our partnership schools. Carmen ensures that each school-partnership is effectively supported. Carmen has eighteen-years of experience working with non-profit and for-profit education start-ups. Carmen received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga.
Bill Zima is the director of implementation for Marzano Academies, working with schools to help realize their unique vision of high reliability organizations that build agency in all learners. He is a former superintendent of Regional School Unit #2 in Hallowell, Maine, considered a leader in the creation of a learner-centered, proficiency-based approach to education. Bill received his bachelor’s degree in industrial technology, electronics from Illinois State University and his Master of Education, science from the University of Central Florida.
Lindsay is currently in charge of educational product development for Marzano Academies. Lindsay has worked in various roles with Marzano Academies since the organization’s inception in 2015. She is an educational researcher and author.
Captain Todd R. Marzano brings deep experience in developing expertise and leading high reliability organizations. During his 30 years in the U.S. Navy he served in numerous squadrons and ships, to include being the first Commanding Officer of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), where he established a winning culture and successfully guided a diverse shipbuilding team through critical construction milestones. He also had the honor of commanding Strike Fighter Squadron 146 and USS Arlington (LPD 24), and served as Executive Officer of USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and USS Nimitz (CVN 68).
Throughout his military career he deployed overseas 7 times, has logged more than 3,000 flight hours and accumulated over 800 carrier-arrested landings flying the F/A-18 Hornet. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado, a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, completed the Navy’s Nuclear Power Training program, and is a graduate of the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN).
